Brownfields
Development:The Implications For Urban Infrastructure
The WWW pages for Brownfields research at Carnegie Mellon University. This project is
supported by the National Science Foundation with the
objective of developing a rational, consistent and systematic approach to decision making
related to infrastructure renewal.
Pittsburgh Regional Site Evaluation System (RISES)
This series of GIS-based programs forms the basis for sophisticated decision support in
understanding and marketing of brownfields. RISES is partially funded by the Heinz
Foundation and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) and
consists of three major components: 1) site database, 2) PC-based site analysis tools, and
3) a web-based site information program.
Nine
Mile Run, a Case Study by The Studio For Creative Inquiry, Carnegie Mellon University
This effort addresses challenges and opportunities faced in transforming an urban
industrial waste site into a sustainable environment of private housing and public
greenspace. Expanding community understanding of the synergy among economic, artistic, and
environmental issues is key. The Heinz Endowment, PA Arts Council, PA DCNR Rivers
Conservation Program, and PA Historical Museum Commission provide funding for this
project.
Broker for Environmental
Regulations
We are developing a web-based presentation of regulations, an interface for regulation
users to access and search these regulations over the web, and a software environment to
help regulatory agencies put their regulations up on the web. The PADEP is also providing
funding support for this project.
Brownfields Financing
Options
Although public recognition and understanding of the opportunities and liabilities related
to brownfield development has increased in the past years, obtaining funding is a major
issue. This site was developed in an effort to help potential developers locate financing
sources and options.
An Evaluation of
the Risk-Based Approach to Brownfield Remediation and Redevelopment
This work is the result of the work performed by Catherine Rakestraw, who spent a year at
the Brownfields Center as a National Urban Fellow. This project was submitted as her
Masters project for a Masters in Environmental Management.
Managing Brownfields as Community Assets: Case
Studies of Five Pittsburgh Sites.
The Graduate School of Public and International Affairs at the University of Pittsburgh
has funding from the National Center for the Revitalization of Central Cities at the
University of New Orleans to study brownfield redevelopments in Pittsburgh: The former
Hays Army ammunition plant in the Hays section of the city that is now the GalvTech metal
procession company; Washington's Landing, a mixed-use commercial, housing, industrial and
recreational project on the former Herr's Island; Nine Mile Run in the city's east end;
the former LTV steel site on the Southside; and two separate properties in Lawrenceville.
