Dzombak Participates in Release of NRC Report

Professor Dave Dzombak has been serving for the last two years as chair of a National Research Council committee charged with examining the effectiveness of the Clean Water Act for protecting and restoring water quality in the Mississippi River. He participated in the release of the report on October 15-16, 2007 in Washington, DC. The report, entitled "Mississippi River Water Quality and the Clean Water Act", is available at the National Academies web site: www.nationalacademies.org. It identifies nutrients and sediments as the two primary water quality problems in the Mississippi, and steps that need to be taken to address these large-scale, non-point source problems. The report has generated a great deal of media interest, especially among the states in the Mississippi River corridor. Dave reports that his work on the "Mississippi River Water Quality and the Clean Water Act" has been a highlight of his career, saying "It afforded me the opportunity to work with 12 other fantastically knowledgable and committed individuals, and to be involved with a project and resulting report that I am confident will yield positive change for protection and restoration of water quality in the Mississippi River." In addition to his long-term association with CEE, Dave also serves as Faculty Director of the Steinbrenner Institute for Environmental Education and Research at Carnegie Mellon.
