AIR STRIPPER DESIGN AND COSTING (ASDC) PROGRAM [last updated 3-20-06]


The Air Stripper Design and Costing (ASDC) computer program, a PC-based public domain program, enables rapid generation and evaluation of alternative air stripper designs for removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from water. ASDC was developed at Carnegie Mellon University, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, from 1990-1992 by David A. Dzombak, Sujoy B. Roy, and Hung-Jung Fang. The ASDC program is described in an article in the Journal of the American Water Works Association, Vol. 85, No. 10, pp. 63-72, 1993. Development of the program was supported by the Air Force Civil Engineering Support Agency.

Packed-tower, counter-current air stripping is a treatment process that is commonly employed for removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from water and wastewater. The design of an air stripper is performed using a well developed mathematical model of the process but is complicated by the fact that the number of variables exceeds the constraining equations by two, with the result that a number of alternative air stripper designs exist for a particular water treatment goal. In selecting the optimum design among the various alternatives, it is important to consider the capital and operating costs associated with each alternative. ASDC is an easy-to-use, menu-driven PC program that contains all necessary chemical property and cost databases to perform rapid evaluation of alternative designs.

If neither of the two download options below work with your web software, ASDC may be obtained on a 3.5-in. diskette by sending to Dr. Dzombak (address given below) a check or money order for $30US ($40US for orders outside of North America) payable to "CMU Dept. of Civil and Environmental Engineering." The program is distributed on a nonprofit basis; the price covers cost of shipping and handling. The complete ASDC package includes the most recent version of the executable software (the source code is not distributed), data files, and a 140-page manual containing a guide to program operation as well as detailed descriptions of the air stripper design and cost estimation submodels.

You can request a copy of the ASDC manual only by sending a written request to Dr. Dzombak with a check or money order for $27US ($40US for delivery outside North America) payable to "CMU Dept. of Civil and Environmental Eng.".

HARDWARE/SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS

ASDC was developed as a DOS-based program but works fine in a DOS window in Microsoft Windows. ASDC requires 640K of RAM and approximately 700K of hard disk space. All files associated with the program should be placed in the same directory on your hard disk. No version of the ASDC program is available for non-PC platforms.

CONDITIONS OF SOFTWARE USE

ASDC is a public domain program. Carnegie Mellon University allows free use of the ASDC software in its "as is" condition. Carnegie Mellon disclaims any liability of any kind for any damages whatsoever resulting from use of the ASDC software.

Users of the ASDC software agree to return to Carnegie Mellon any improvements or extensions that they make and grant Carnegie Mellon the rights to redistribute these changes. Export of the ASDC software is permitted only after complying with the regulations of the U.S. Department of Commerce relating to the Export of Technical Data.

A self-extracting compressed executable file (ASDCCOMP.EXE, 221 kilobytes) can be downloaded to your local machine by clicking below, and then clicking on the name of the file when it appears. The set of files extracted upon running ASDCCOMP.EXE includes all the files needed to run ASDC as well as a copy of the text of the manual (but no figures).
