Dr. Dzombak is the Walter J. Blenko, Sr. Professor of Environmental Engineering in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Carnegie Mellon.  The emphasis of his research and teaching is on water quality engineering and environmental remediation.  At Carnegie Mellon he is Associate Dean for Graduate and Faculty Affairs for the College of Engineering, and Faculty Director of the Steinbrenner Institute for Environmental Education and Research.

 

Dr. Dzombak received his Ph.D. in Civil-Environmental Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1986.  He also holds an M.S. in Civil-Environmental Engineering (1981) and B.S. in Civil Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University (1980).  In addition, he received a B.A. in Mathematics from Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, PA (1980, 3-2 math-engineering program).  He is a registered Professional Engineer in Pennsylvania, a Diplomate of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers, and a member of the National Academy of Engineering.

 

Dr. Dzombak’s research and professional interests include: aquatic chemistry, especially interactions of chemicals with mineral surfaces in water; fate and transport of chemicals in surface and subsurface waters; water and wastewater treatment; soil treatment; hazardous waste site remediation; abandoned mine drainage remediation; river and watershed restoration; and public communication of environmental science.  He has published numerous articles in leading environmental engineering and science journals; book chapters; articles for the popular press; and two books (Surface Complexation Modeling: Hydrous Ferric Oxide, Wiley-Interscience, 1990; Cyanide in Water and Soil, CRC/Taylor&Francis, 2006).  He also has a wide range of consulting experience.

 

His professional service activity has included the EPA Science Advisory Board (Environmental Engineering Committee, 2001-present); the EPA National Advisory Council for Environmental Policy and Technology, Environmental Technology Subcommittee (2004-present); the National Research Council (Chair, Committee on the Mississippi River and the Clean Water Act, 2005-2007; Committee on Bioavailability of Contaminants in Soils and Sediments, 2000-2002); Associate Editor of Environmental Science & Technology (2005-present); Editorial Board of Water Environment Research (1993-1998) and Ground Water (1991-1993); Board of Directors and Officer (Treasurer) of the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors (1996-1999); chair of committees for the American Academy of Environmental Engineers, American Society of Civil Engineers, and Water Environment Federation; and advisory committees for Allegheny County and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

 

Dr. Dzombak was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2008.  Other awards include election as a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers (2002); the Excellence in Review Award from Environmental Science and Technology (2003); Professional Research Award from the Pennsylvania Water Environment Association (2002); Jack Edward McKee Medal from the Water Environment Federation (2000); Aldo Leopold Leadership Program Fellowship from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation (2000); Distinguished Service Award from the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors (1999);  Walter L. Huber Civil Engineering Research Prize from the American Society of Civil Engineers (1997); Harrison Prescott Eddy Medal from the Water Environment Federation (1993); and National Science Foundation Presidential Young Investigator Award (1991).
