Engineering Your Future 2001 and 2002

Engineering Your Future Civil and Environmental Engineering

Morning 2001 and 2002: The Built Environment – Bridge Construction

Different types of bridge construction will be discussed.  Students will work in teams to design and build a bridge to withstand a given load, be constructed within a set timeframe, and to meet a budget.  After construction, bridges will be tested with loads to failure.

Afternoon 2001: The Natural Environment – Aquifer Contamination

Sources and types of aquifers, watersheds, and chemical contamination will be discussed.  Students will work in teams to construct a model aquifer, contaminate it and then look at methods for environmental restoration.

Afternoon 2002: The Natural Environment – Drinking Water Treatment

Importance of clean water and how it is achieved will be discussed.  Students will work in teams to construct a model filter system and to treat water through coagulation, settling, filtration and final chlorination.
