Revised EPP Policy on Double Counting

September, 2003

  1. Double Counting of Technical Electives:

Any EPP Technical Elective that is taken by an EPP double major will count as one of the four required EPP Technical Electives, no matter how else this course is (or is not) required in the student’s program.

  2. No Reduction in Number of Courses, Even if Minimum Units are Met.

When a course is double counted for an EPP technical elective, the student must fill the resulting open course position according to the rules set forth in Part 3 below.  Under these circumstances, there are cases where the EPP technical elective 9 unit minimum is more than the number of units specified for the single major elective it replaces.  The reduced unit specification of the single major elective may be used, even if it causes the total units to drop below the published double major degree minimum, as long as they meet the degree minimum required by the single major.  It is emphasized that the student can not  reduce the number of required courses through double counting, or any other manipulation of units, even if minimum degree units could be met or exceeded in this fashion.

Example: In the ECE/EPP double major, a 9 unit EPP technical elective replaces a 6 unit ECE free elective. A student who double counts an EPP technical elective would be permitted to take the 6 unit single major elective, even though this would result in a unit total below the published 363 unit double major minimum, as long as the student meets the single major 360 unit minimum.

EPP double major unit minimums are higher than those of the single major because of one or more of the following reasons:  (1) EPP 12 unit project courses replace 9 unit electives in the single major; (2) EPP sophomore seminar imposes up to 3 additional units where there are no single major seminars to replace;  (3) An EPP 9 unit minimum technical or social analysis elective sometimes replaces a 6 unit free elective.  Our main concern is that, since there can be as many as 9 additional units associated with the double major, students would attempt to use them to meet the single major degree unit minimum, while actually taking one less course than a single major student. We publish the higher unit minimum to close this loophole.  The unit reduction associated with double counting course substitution does not cause this problem and, therefore, is acceptable.

  3. Restrictions on Replacement Courses.

The replacement course will be required to meet applicable restrictions in the single major.  If the EPP technical electives replace more than one type of single major elective, the least restrictive elective may be used first.  The following courses are replaced by EPP technical electives:
