The Ohio River Basin (ORB) extends from SW NY, through PA, WV, OH, IN, KY, and IL with a total population of 25 million (approx. 10% of US population).
3.6 million people live in cities adjacent to the Ohio River, and they rely heavily on surface water for drinking water supply.
The main stem Ohio River is drinking water source for more than 5 million people.
The Ohio River is impaired for contact recreation due to high indicator organism concentration. The upper two thirds of the Ohio River show contamination with dioxin and PCBs.
The Ohio River houses 49 power generating facilities (generating about 6% of US capacity), and 230 million tons of cargo is transported on the Ohio River annually.
