Alumni Outreach Activities
For the past nine years, the department has hosted an annual alumni dinner, giving the alumni the opportunity to reconnect with faculty, staff and fellow alumni and providing the department the chance to showcase current projects and initiatives. The dinner is held in the Pittsburgh area and attracts both local and out-of-town alumni.
Department Head Visits and Presentations to Alumni Groups
The department head travels to various parts of the country to specifically meet with groups of alumni in that area. During these visits, the department head makes presentations about the current status and activities of the department. During these presentations, usually done over a lunch, the department head shares news of student and faculty accomplishments and provides information on the status of undergraduate and graduate education in the department. Individual visits with specific alumni in the area are also arranged during this same visit.
In addition to meeting CEE alumni, these visits are usually coordinated with the Central Alumni Office and a general alumni event is also made part of these visits. In AY 2006-07, visits were arranged to Washington, D.C., Seattle, Washington, and Phoenix, Arizona. The general event in Washington D.C. was a presentation by Garrett on the Center for Sensed Critical Infrastructure Research, which resulted in meeting several alums who came back to campus to participate in the 2007 CenSCIR Symposium held in May 2007. In Phoenix, Arizona, a tour of the new Cardinals Stadium was arranged and Garret made a few comments about the current activities on campus. The department head has committed to do about four of these visits a year and they are coordinated with the CEE and CIT Alumni Relations Coordinators.
Alumni and Student Networking Events
An annual undergraduate/alumni networking event was initiated last spring. CEE students in their junior year were invited to a reception with alumni from various fields to learn about the internship and career opportunities available in the field of civil and environmental engineering. Juniors are targeted for the event because the junior year is a time when students are often focusing their career plans. This event is intended to demonstrate to students that the large CEE alumni network can help them in starting and maintaining their careers. It also shows them the benefit of remaining engaged with Carnegie Mellon after they graduate. Lastly, it provides us another means by which to engage alumni in department activities and in current student activities.
